Research Innovative Concepts In all of the research areas of Wasser 3.0, the innovative material science concepts are investigated for their func- tionality and transferability in various polluted environ- ments and vis-à-vis different stressors and stressor groups. The focus is on the research of so called silicon-based inorganic-organic hybrid materials, which have a special functional design. By means of chemically induced reactions, it results in the fixation of individual stressors with high concentrations, which are often found in industrial environments, as well as the re- moval of variable contaminants, which, for example, exist in communal wastewater. Through the direct transfer of the work from the laboratory to the technical and plant scale, the path is paved to functioning plant technology, which also includes the establishment of continuous measurement and control technology. From the concept to the product Wasser 3.0 With our adaptable to stressors functionalized hybrid silica gels from the production facilities of abcr GmbH, we are in the position to develop tailor-made solutions for variable stressor situations. In this context, variable means that the composition of the conta- mination parameters and thus also the concentration of the trace substances in the water can change. With their porous surfaces, these materials can absorb, chemically transform and firmly fix great quantities of trace substances. Wasser 3.0 is the first method, which is capable of removing large amounts of micro- plastic from the water (PE-X). In combination with our products to remove dissolved stressors, holistic solutions re- sult, e.g. for application in the fourth purification stage of a communal treatment plant.

The focus is not only on the technology exclusively for application in industrialized countries, but especially also making affordable solutions available for use in developing countries and in crisis regions.

Originally located at the University of Koblenz-Landau, a network developed under the content-related and organizational leadership of Dr. Katrin Schuhen, which set itself the goal of providing clean water worldwide. Together with her team of doctoral candidates and students as well as the founding cooperation partner, abcr GmbH from Karlsruhe, a new material scientific concept could be elaborated. Since 2017, plant technology has also been firmly anchored in the project with Zahnen Technik GmbH from Arzfeld. In the network with analytics partners, research is being done on tailor-made solutions, which will improve the water quality worldwide. The communication and educational work of the project should also not be neglected.
